Goiás City

This historic town used to be the capital of Goiás State until 1937, when Goiânia came to be the current capital. Goiás has one of the richest cultural and architectural heritages in the country , the reason why, in 2001, it was declared by UNESCO a cultural heritage of Mankind. Its tranquil streets preserve the original stone paving and the eighteenth century historic buildings reveal a colonial architectural style where simplicity mixed with a few barroc style influences prevail.

 

The town enables any visitor getting in touch with history. If you walk down the streets, enter the various churches, admire the historic buildings such as Museu das Bandeiras (where documents and objects evoke the history of the ''bandeirantes''), Museu da Boa Morte (where sacred images made by the saint sculptor Veiga Valle can be seen), Palácio Conde dos Arcos (the official residence of ex-governors), or visit  Casa da Ponte (''bridge house''), where one of the most distinguished town dwellers , the poetess Cora Coralina, used to live in, then you will be able to breathe the magic atmosphere of this secular town.

 

The generous Cora Coralina, who became a poetess at the age of 71 and wrote poems until her death at 95, wanted to share the beauties of Goiás City. Therefore, she launched a lyric invitation in verses to the world: ''poets and artists / romantic, surrealist, concretist, cubist / I call upon you / Come all sing, rhyme in verses / bizarre and colorful / the lanes of my homeland.`` If you accept this invitation, you will not regret it.
